April, recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), is one of the busiest months of the year for the hard-working staff in our Sexual Assault Service Center as they participate in countless awareness events and activities. “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®,” is certainly one of our most unique and exciting events in honor of SAAM.
“It is a playful opportunity for men to stand up for the basic human rights of women,” said GACS CEO Ines Kutlesa, “and to raise awareness about the serious causes, effects, and remediations to sexualized violence against women.”
Men are asked to walk one mile in women’s shoes to bring attention to the important role men play in stopping sexualized violence against women. Wearing heels is optional while most are up for the challenge.
The April 2016 event was a year to remember as a special guest speaker kicked off the day, Chris Baker. Baker, founder of INK 180, a nonprofit focused on “transforming the painful reminders of the destructive situations into beautiful art by covering the tattoos left from a former life in a gang or enslaved by human trafficking.” Read more about Chris & INK 180 here.
